Is palm oil in your dog food?
What is palm oil?
Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil that comes from the fruit of oil palm trees. Although it isn’t inherently bad if farmed sustainably, many farms farm unsustainably.
In the past year, its widespread use has become more known due to advertising campaigns, but many products – including numerous dog food brands continue to use it – as some sort of oil is generally needed in dog food.
The two types of the oil that can be produced are its crude form, which comes from squeezing fruit, and kernel oil which comes from crushing the stone in the middle of the fruit.
What is the problem with palm oil?
The oil has been and continues to be a major driver of deforestation of some of the world’s forests. Due to this, Malaysian and Indonesian forests have been affected– where over 90% of the worlds oil palm trees are farmed – generally in an unsustainable way.
Unsustainable farming methods continue to destroy animal habitats of many critically endangered species. As a result of this, orangutans, tigers and other species have been affected by oil production. However, production hasn’t yet slowed down. And more worrying, production will have to increase by 2050.
Continuing from the previous section, the farming of it is a necessity. However, due to the high demand – farmers opt for cheap farming methods that destroy the local environment, and the habitats they hold.
